How to stop excessive sweating using Botox

When we think about Botox we usually associate it with anti-aging treatments and the removal of facial lines and wrinkles, and, although Botox is extremely effective for forehead line removal, it has many other uses and has also been proven to be highly successful in the prevention of excessive sweating also known as ‘Hyperhidrosis’.

So what causes people to sweat excessively?

Sweating is a natural reaction to control our body temperature and is regulated by the nervous system so that we don’t sweat too much or too little. However, between 1 and 3% of the population has a problem with profuse sweating whereby this sweat-regulation system sometimes goes into overdrive, producing far more sweat than is normally required and causing sufferers to perspire excessively and at the wrong times.

The condition, which impacts both sexes, can be brought on by a variety of factors such as hot and clammy weather conditions or feeling nervous. It can be very debilitating for those affected by it, making it difficult for them to interact normally with others, hesitating about simple things, like shaking hands with someone, having sweaty armpits, constantly worrying about changing clothes and freshening up. It can be a very lonely and depressing existence for people who suffer from excessive sweating.

How is Botox used to treat excessive sweating?

At Laserase Medical skincare we treat excessive sweating using Botox to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical that turns on the eccrine glands, the glands that stimulate sweat production. Once treated, the area should sweat significantly less causing a great sense of relief to the sufferer. For excessive underarm sweating, for example, the skin treatment consists of a number of Botox injections to the armpit area, using a very fine needle, just below the surface of the skin, causing minimal discomfort for the patient. There might be some redness for a short period afterwards, but there is minimal ‘down time’ and there should be no reason for the patient not to return to their normal activities directly from having the procedure. However, we do advise against exercising for at least 24 hours following this particular skincare treatment.

Is the treatment for hyperhidrosis effective and how long does it last?

As with facial Botox treatments the effects are temporary and the skin treatment will usually need to be repeated every 6 months, although the frequency of treatments depends on the severity of each individual case. However, Botox has proven to be highly effective in the treatment of excessive underarm sweating and has demonstrated great results with a success rate of around 90% in the UK. This means that people who suffer from excessive sweating can have a normal daily functioning routine and better quality of life.

What other areas can be treated for excessive sweating?

In the UK, Botox injections are licensed for the treatment of underarm (axillae) hyperhidrosis but not for palmar (hands) or plantar (feet) Hyperhidrosis conditions, although these conditions can be treated at some private hospitals.
