Tired of all the ‘New Year, New Me’ articles and announcements on social media and in the press? Does the idea of starting the year off with ever-more challenging resolutions stress you out? If so, then this blog post is for you.

After an over-indulgent holiday period – and let’s face it, we all enjoy over-indulging a little during the festive season – not only do we want to get back to normal, but we want to be back to looking and feeling fantastic as soon as possible, ideally before we’ve taken the tree down and put the decorations back in the attic! We want results and we want them yesterday! And, in this digital age, where we are bombarded with images of how amazing we should be looking and feeling, at a time when we have just eaten our own weight in chocolate, and can no longer fit into our skinny jeans, the idea of becoming a super-fit shiny new version of ourselves seems even more appealing.

 

New Year’s resolutions are big business for retailers too. At this time of year, our social media newsfeeds are inundated with work-out videos and fitness regimes tempting us to sign up to the latest programme. Have you noticed how clothing stores strategically place their gym-wear range at the entrance to meet you as you arrive? And just about everyone from airlines to department stores offer discounts in January to entice you to spend even more.

Welcome to the annual ‘New Year, New Me’ spending frenzy!

Mission impossibleMany of us start off the new year by making all sorts of promises that we will become a brand new, fitter and healthier version of ourselves. And who can blame us?! However, with all this pressure to be perfect, too often many of us try to push ourselves too hard with unrealistic resolutions. You know the ones; crash dieting, soon-to-be-forgotten gym memberships, complete detox programmes, the no-carb diets, quitting smoking, giving up alcohol, spending less time on social media….the list could go on.Fad diets and strict exercise regimes are very difficult to stick to once the holidays are over and we get back into our normal routine. Take the pressure offWhy not take the stress-factor out of your New Year’s resolutions this year by making some time for YOU? Instead of trying to achieve a complete mind and body transformation in a mere few weeks, set yourself a different type of goal for 2017. Make it your objective to be good to yourself. Dedicate some time for you. Treat yourself to some well-deserved care and attention, and don’t be too strict with your deadlines either. Instead, commit to being good to yourself throughout the entirety of the year, whether that means doing something special once a week, or once a month. You set the pace. Make your resolutions personal and achievable goals to become an enhanced and improved ‘you’ without the pressure.

Be MindfulAccept yourself for who you are and enjoy the moment. Take some down-time with friends and family, book a treatment at a spa or a weekend away. Enjoy a massage or sign-up a course of skincare treatments that you might have been thinking about.

Being mindful of yourself and your well-being is just as important as staying fit and watching your weight. According to Professor emeritus Jon Kabat-Zinn, in his blog about the Benefits of Mindfulness, “practicing mindfulness can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health attitudes and behaviors”.
